Hello SheSkiers....

Two things to factor in...the rain and the "Groomers' Appreciation Party"....we'll go to RedMesa THIS Wed., the 13th and be able to attend the groomers' function the following week.

Plan to order from the menu, have seperate checks and gather at 6:00 at RedMesa for the annual "Graduation" party! Please let me know if you will attend so I can let them how many to set up for...see you there...this is it for the year until SheBikes begins later in the spring.

When you see Kristin, be sure to give her a huge tip of your hat for
hosting us once again this year!!    Linda

March 3, 2013
Hello SheSkiers!

Several events coming up...

This Wednesday we will not ski, but go to  InsideOut Gallery @ 7:00 to see the cycling film "Reveal the Path"...ought to be great and is a fund raiser for the Cherry Capital Cycling Club! Please go to the club's web site for ALL the details (cherrycapitalcyclingclub.org) ...there is much information there, including how to save some $$ on the tickets! Jeanette Wildman has offered to pick up tickets for those of you who are SURE you're going to be there..if you're interested in having her do that for you, please contact her at: jnette50@gmail.com.

Another opportunity for some fun is to attend "Legally Blonde" at the Old Town Playhouse! Clair Shipstead is in the chorus and it would be great to see her in it! For those of you who want to attend, we'll try to go on the same night, so let's pick March 14th Please go to www.oldtownplayhouse.com for all the information..

For your planning....on Wednesday, the 13th, we will have our final "official"ski night of the year..Kristin has been kind enough to offer to keep the Lodge open for us...of course, this is weather permitting. The following Wednesday, March 20th, we'll gather at Red Mesa for our annual end of the season "Graduation Dinner". Details for that evening will follow..for now, be sure to mark your calendars!!

February 25, 2013
Hello all SheSkiers!

It's coming!!!! "Rock the Moon Night" will be this Wednesday...the full moon is really Monday, but it should be beautiful on Wednesday, too..hopefully, it won't be too cloudy to see it!

There'll be some refreshments out at the Rock parking lot, so remember you have to go beyond Strombolis Rd. a bit to the lot on your right.....watch for my black Element!!

It will be a good idea to start skiing before 6:00, if you are able to so you actually have time to get out to the Rock and BACK for Kristin's treats for us.....keep in mind, you don't HAVE to go all the way to the Rock, if you don't want to, or don't have time to...just be back to the Lodge by 7:00 for Kristin's Surprises

See you soon...Linda

February 17, 2013
Hello all SheSkiers!

Thank you all so very much for sharing my and Connie's birthdays with us last week! The treats were outstanding and the company was the BEST.....
No one could ever ask for a better group of supportive friends!

More fun for this week with Kristin providing somethings delicious for us for after skiing...plan to ski on your own and then meet in the Lodge at 7:00 PM for food and great company!!

Last week, there was a pair of men's blue gloves in amongst the prizes for the relay races....if any of you picked them up, they really do belong to Roger Putman and he would like them back....you can either get them to him, or bring them on Wednesday, if you have them.

Bring your "Hungries" and I'll see you Wednesday......next week we'll "Rock the Moon" - it's the February full moon on Monday, the 25th...we'll ski to the Rock (or shorter, if you want) and back for more fun in the Lodge.

Linda

February 11, 2013
Good Morning All...

First, congratulations go out to all SheSki women who skied and/or
helped with the VASA this past weekend...it was nearly perfect in every
way!

Then, weather permitting, brought back by very popular demand, we will
have our annual Relay Races with prizes for the winning team!

Come to Timber Ridge early to get more skiing time in if you can, but
plan to gather in the Lodge at  6:00 PM, ready to go out after we get
everyone organized into their teams....remember there will be a classic
skier in each team...we'll do some warm up skiing prior to the
relay...this is GREAT fun!!!

See you there...Linda

February 4, 2013
Hello all..

After surviving the bus trip and braving blowing snow, the "Marching Band" made it to Black Star Farms in fine shape and had a great time doing the Women's Winter Tour!

We have a treat in store of this Wednesday...Paula Dreeszen and Laura Webb are going to be in the Lodge at 7:00 to share their racing experiences with us...preparation, anticipation, etiquette of the course, what to do the night before, how to get yourself organized on the day of, what to wear and anything else you want to ask them...it will be a casual format with lots of interaction and time to have your questions and concerns addressed.

This session will be a lead up to the VASA Races this weekend and OUR next week's Relay Races, which are returning by popular demand again this year!

It will also follow an evening/afternoon of great skiing that you decide on your own how long and where to ski...just be back in the Lodge by
7:00 to listen/talk to Laura and Paula.

If any of you want to bring some beverages to share, that would be great, too :) We will also have 50/50 Raffle tickets to sell @ $20!!

See you there..Linda

January 29, 2013

Hello all....due to the poor weather, we will not ski this week...Kristin called; we talked and decided to cancel for this week..do plan on NEXT week to ski...details to follow, but Kristin's surprise will have to wait as she has a show to do.

Now, for the Women's Winter Tour...

Remember, we are going as a marching band...wear your black ski pants, black jacket of some sort (borrow one if necessary) and your  SheSkis hat if you have one, otherwise, wear a black hat of your choice. Bring a toy musical instrument that you can hang around your neck so you can use both hands to ski...you can get them at the Dollar Stores, KMart, Target, etc...if you don't want to do that part, you can be a baton twirler (Marcie T. IS a real one!), pom pom girl, drum major or some other "person" who would be with the band.....director/conductor?? Plan to gather at the Holiday Inn by the Senior Center to be ready to catch the bus @10:00 AM...we'll do the 5K distance which is to Black Star Farms from Bingham Rd. Be sure to register on line ASAP to make it easier and cheaper at check in!! So Kaye can plan on buses, would you please let me know that you're planning to attend...

Next Marcie asked that you be reminded that she is teaching a Piloxing class Thursday night and a Kickboxing class on Saturday morning at the college starting in February. You can go online or call the extended education office to register. She would love to see some familiar faces.

See you Sunday and do let me know if you plan to attend!
Linda

January 26, 2013
Hello All SheSkiers!

Plan to ski your own......make it fun and/or a challenge - it's up to you! If you need some pointers, let me know so we can arrange for someone to go with you....

Then, be in back in the Lodge at 7:00 PM...Kristin has the Surprise for us this time....

We'll be on our way home by 8:00 PM after a great evening, thanking Kristin and Ella all the way to our doorsteps!!

Several reminders:

1) Register for the Women's Winter Tour on line...it's Sun., Feb. 3 and we're going as a group as a marching band!! Details to follow.....

2) VASA News - Skiers are needed to "man" several Road/Trail Crossings and serve as Course Sweeps and 50/50  Raffle Tickets are now available.....contact me  - Nancy Briggs, Ellen Fivenson and Gussie Peterson also have tickets.

3) You still have time to join the Vasa Ski Club and become involved with MI Cup!! It's great fun and you earn points for the club no matter where you finish!!

4) There will be a special VASA WaveStart (@ noon) for anyone who wishes to ski, touring style, the 12K with Dr. John Bruder, who is known to many of us.

If the weather gets in the way, I will send an update, otherwise, I will see you skiing Wednesday and then in the Lodge!

Linda

January 20, 2013
Hello All SheSkiers..

For this Wednesday, 1/23, let's plan to ski on your own from 6:00-7:00 and then gather in the Lodge for Irma and Birgett's surprise...if you want more time to ski, plan to arrive at Timber Ridge before 6:00, if you are able. Newer skiers should not hesitate; there will be SOMEONE for you to ski with!

New from Clare Shipstead....she's in "Legally Blonde" at the Playhouse in March....let's pick a performance night and go together..it will be great fun! Please let me know what you think of this idea for something a little different so I know how to proceed!

Speaking of great fun, the Winter Tour is right around the corner....it's been suggested by the artful and creative costume diva, Alice Hauser-Baron that we meet at a specific time (TBD) wearing black jackets, black ski pants and as many of the black SheSki hats that are still around and go as a group as a MARCHING BAND!!! Toy plastic instruments can be purchased at any of the dollar stores, KMart, Target, Walmart, etc. or you can raid your family's supply! No luck with finding an instrument? A band needs twirlers, pom pom people, drum majors, flag bearers, etc...be creative..we can make this work!

Be sure to register for the event online - Women's Winter Tour and click on the Register button...do it now and save $$$$!

Reminder to register for the VASA!!!!..or Volunteer if you don't want to race!

January 13, 2013
Hello all...

Well, we didn't get much time to practice all we learned last week, but the lessons were much appreciated and we will put those skills to good use, hopefully this Wednesday! Thanks again, Gussie for putting all that together for us...the instructors were the BEST!!

Plan to ski from 6:00 - 6:50 PM , or start earlier, if you want to have a longer time to ski....

Then come into the Lodge for our presentation on Nutrition for Athletes that will begin at 7:00.....bring a snack to share and your beverage of choice..you can share that, too if you like!! We'll be on our way home at 8:00 so Ella, Kristin and Travis can do the same!

Reminders:

Womens'  Winter Tour - Feb. 3  perhaps a costume or theme for all of us??

North American VASA and GranTravers - Feb. 9 and 10..if you can't race or volunteer, come over to TR and bring your cowbells to cheer our friends on to victories!!

Hope to see you Wednesday! Linda

January 5, 2013
Happy New Year SheSkiers!

Plan to meet at Timber Ridge on Wed., Jan 9th to be out on the snow by
6:00 for our lesson night! If you need to rent equipment, please do so
well ahead of time so you can be all set to ski. We will divide into
multiple smaller groups - classic or skate with beginning, intermediate
and possibly advanced levels within each discipline. Gussie Peterson has
done an outstanding job of recruiting awesome instructors for us, so
plan on it. There will be an email fan out IF we must cancel.

Remember to purchase your Grooming Badge from TART to support the
grooming of the VASA Trail, your Timber Ridge Trail Pass (Seasonal,
Punch Card or Daily/Nightly) and your membership in the Vasa Ski Club
that supports our local skiers!

Speaking of local skiers, It's not too late to join Vasa Ski Club for
the MI Cup! We need every point we can get. The other teams are gunning
to get the cup away from us, so we can't get complacent. Everyone who
participates in a MI Cup race gets points, so even if you do one race,
it helps! Where you finish doesn't matter; it's the fun of the race and
doing it that does matter!!

From an email yesterday from Ernie Brumbaugh (head of Michigan Cup) we
can add racers to the roster until Jan 31, not Dec 31. So, please join
the Vasa Ski Club and also check off an additional $7 to be scored as
Michigan Cup for the Vasa Ski Club.
Vasa ski Club web site has a membership form.

> Please help us retain the Michigan Cup in Traverse City.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 9th!
Linda

December 29, 2012
Hello All SheSkiers!

Happy New Year to each of you, trusting that your Christmas/Holiday celebrations were wonderful ones...

Please remember that we will begin meeting again on Wed., Jan. 9 - Gussie Peterson has arranged for us to have a lesson night covering both skate and classic styles, so if you don't have equipment yet, you will need to make arrangements for rental at Timber Ridge (or the ski shop of your choice). We will gather to be ready to begin on the snow at 6:00; the lesson will take an hour and then you may stay and ski/practice until 8:00. Of you want to come before 6:00 to ski, that's great - just be back at the Lodge a little before 6:00 to be ready for the lesson.

Due to our earlier cancellation, we will have only one lesson night which means you will have to choose between the two disciplines.
However, if enough of you want another lesson night, we can probably pull one together.

Please be sure to purchase your Timber Ridge Trail pass, or punch card, or pay nightly and remember to get your Grooming Badge from TART! Also, Vasa Ski Club is a great club that welcomes new members!!

See you skiing, Linda

Also, if you or any of you know of anyone who may be interested in learning, or improving cross country skiing skills, there are a few spots remaining in the ever popular "WeSki" program....see vasa.org for details and call Timber Ridge @947-2770 to register. Do it now as space is limited to the first 90 persons!

December 17, 2012
Happy Holidays Everyone!

We are going to meet at Red Mesa for refreshments and food instead of dry land training at Timber Ridge, so please work out on your own.
Meet at 6:00 PM and ask for SheSkis..we'll order from the menu and each have our own check.
PLEASE RSVP to me so I can let Red Mesa know how many of us are coming!
Hope to see you there..Linda

December 9, 2012
Women of SheSkis.....

Well, since the weather hasn't cooperated, we have an alternate plan for the coming week...Lesley, one of our newest members and a certified yoga instructor, (among other certifications as well) will be leading us through a yoga session for skiers! Bring your mat and water bottle, dress comfortably, wear your tennis shoes and meet at 6:00 PM at Timber Ridge for an hour's workout. Ought to be a great time!!

Two items of interest....

1) The Annual Souper Bowl is in need of a leader since Sara Cockrell will be out of town at that time..remember, it's Super Bowl Sunday?!
Contact her for details at:    sara369@charter.net

2) Registration for WeSki is open....go to vasa.org to dowload and print the registration form that needs to be taken to Timber Ridge along with your $$ for the three week program...remember the program fills up FAST and preference is given to first timers. Details at vasa.org.

See you Wednesday....Linda

December 3, 2012
Hello all SheSkiers!

Martha Videan, who did our Zumba session last year and is a certified Pliates instructor as well will lead us in our workout designed to focus on balance and core strength - two essential areas that we often forget about as skiers in our workouts getting ready for the season.

Plan on wearing your tennis shoes, stretchy pants and shirt; bring a yoga mat or pad as we will be doing floor work as well as being on our feet; have your water bottle handy!

I will ask Ella to have the heat on for us, but it's apt to be a bit chilly at first until we get warmed up.

I've attached the waxing handouts from last week from last week in case you didn't get your copy.
Click on the following link
http://origin.library.constantcontact.com/download/get/file/1102388341841-157/Waxing+Skis+Notes+for+SheSkis+2012.pdf

See YOU at 6:00 PM at "The Ridge" - plan on an hour...I will be late (VASA Board meeting); Judy Yeager will get you started.

Linda

November 23, 2012

Hello SheSkiers!

I'm hoping each of you had a thankful and grateful Thanksgiving and that
you ate LOTS of turkey!!

Special for this week is a trip to the Schulz home for our annual waxing
clinic! Plan to work out on your own...Hill bounding with Irma and Paula
is a great option for Tuesday!!

Paula Dreeszen will be demonstrating the classic wax techniques and
Marilyn will do the skate.  Also Terry Hansen will be demoing her waxing
benches and selling them for $50.  4422 Audubon drive is our address.
(Holiday Hills road  left onto Greenwood to another left onto  Audubon
Drive....we are located half way down on the right side of the street.)
6:00 to 7:30.....  How about each of us bringing snacks to share!!

Bring on the SNOW!!
Linda

November 12, 2012

Hey Everyone...

Marcie Taliska is all ready for us on Wednesday night....6:00-7:00 for KICK BOXING!

Marcie says, "It is a great workout people will enjoy. All they need is a good pair of shoes, comfortable clothes, water and a wiliness to try something new. I like this workout because it combines agility, balance, strength and coordination in one session. "

We'lll have running/walking starting from the parking lot at TR @ 5:00 PM to be back in time for Marcie's "class"!

Then, this just in from Andrew for our use...if you can't get the video link, go to their website www.superiortherapy.com , click on the "YouTube" icon in the upper right hand corner and then go to our link for SheSkis...it's great..I think you will find it most helpful!

Hello Everyone!

We are in for such a treat on Wednesday, the 7th!!

For those who can make it and would like a short workout, plan to meet
in the parking lot  at Brick Wheels at 5:00 to go ski walking, or
running on the TART Trail behind Brick's...we'll go for 1/2 to 3/4 of an
hour to be back to Brick's well before 6:00 to enjoy snacks,
refreshments and some social time before the main events begin......

Mike and Peggy Wagner, Fischer and Swix area reps, respectively, will be
telling/showing us all about the latest and greatest as far as equipment
and apparel goes...their portions of the evening will begin @6:00 PM at
Brick Wheels and end around 7:00...following that, we will have time to
shop in the store with a 20% discount!!! HINT: Bring your check books,
credit cards and/or cash!!

Plan to bring a snack to share and beverage of your choice. Kristie from
Brick Wheels will have paper products for us.
Also, bring your water bottle and short ski poles for Nordic Walking;
dress for the weather and plan to have a great time!!

See you at some point(s) on the 7th!!
Linda

October 27, 2012

We have been invited to help at Iceman in Zone 3...that would be closest to Timber Ridge and involves monitoring the course and keeping the riders safe out on the trail from Kalkaska. Bob and I do Zone 2 and it is a blast to be a part of this event....you see a lot of your friends striving to get to the Finish Line!! Anyway, if you are available for a chunk of time on Saturday, Nov. 3, let Pete LaPlaca know at this address:

vanguard@chartermi.net

Also, a reminder that we will not meet for dryland training on 10/31 due to Halloween, so be sure to work out on your own!

I look forward to seeing you at Iceman and then at Brick Wheels on 11/7 for our session on new equipment and ski clothes! We'll do something out on the TART Trail behind Brick's prior to it and you may bring a snack and/or beverage to share as well.
Linda

October 22, 2012Plans for 10/24/12

Back by popular demand from last year will be Andrew Gorecki, DPT
(doctor of physical therapy) from Superior Physical Therapy. We all
benefited so much from his session on injury prevention last year, that
we asked him back!

Plan to meet at 6:00 PM @ Timber Ridge for his active session with us.
Bring your ski poles (Andrew sometimes has us do exercises with poles)
and water bottle. As always, dress for the weather. If it is
raining/stormy, we will have the session in the Banquet Hall. SheSkis
will last until 7:00 this week.

Remember that next week is Halloween, so we will not get
together...workout on your own! Why not plan a session or two with those
who are at TR on the 24th??? Workouts are always more fun when you share
it with someone! You can always join the group for hill bounding at
Hickory Hills on Tuesdays and Mt. Holiday on Thursdays!!

See you then!
Linda

October 14, 2012
Hello sheSki Women...

Welcome to Monsoon Season..or so it seems anyway! I've checked the long range weather and it looks good for Wednesday so, let's plan on meeting at TR @ 6:00 to do some more ski walking, hill bounding and include some ski specific plyometrics..then we'll go into the Banquet Hall by 7:00 for our session on Trail Safety...Join us for both parts if you can as they promise to be very beneficial for us! Bring your water bottle and short ski poles and wear shoes that you would wear for running, or a workout.

While I realize that Nordic Night at Brick Wheels conflicts with our session this week, Brick Wheels is holding a special night for SheSkis later on....Wed., Nov. 7th so no need to feel you're losing out on the deal...our night will be GREAT!!

I'll get that schedule together soon and get that out to everyone!

Some reminders:

1) Grooming Badges, Timber Ridge Trail Passes and VASA Ski Club memberships will all be available for purchase at the Ski Fest to be held at Brick Wheels on Sunday, Oct. 21..various events throughout the day, including the annual Ski Swap! In addition, you will be able to register on site for the North American VASA

2) It's bow season for deer, so when you go out on the trails for a workout, wear your blaze orange and make your presence KNOWN in the woods! Go with a buddy; use your Road ID's; let someone know where you're going and about when you plan to return.

Here's a message from Terri Hanson...regardless of your opinion of Lance Armstrong, Livestrong really does wonderful work and we are honored that Terri, Karen and Jean and are representing us!!!

Hey everyone,
As you probably know by now, Karen Belanger, Jean Peters and I are going to Austin to participate in the Team Austin Livestrong Challenge. We leave next Friday and the 100 mile bike ride is next Sunday. We are going as Travese City Ambassadors to help bring a Livestrong Challenge here to raise money for the Cowell Cancer Treatment Center near Munson, and to raise money for Livestrong.  We are still collecting donations and if you would like to donate, here is the link. We appreciate your consideration.  Thanks!!  Terri

http://laf.livestrong.org/site/TR/Challe  ...

That's it for now...stay dry and warm!!
Linda

October 8, 2012
Hey, Ladies, It's OFFICIAL now!!

We're SheSkis until next biking season starts!!

Won't you join us for Dry Land Training for XC Skiing?

SheSkis starts THIS Wednesday, Oct. 10...6:00 PM @ Timber Ridge Resort on Hammond Road...

Bring your water bottle and short ski poles. If you have some Nordic Walking poles, those would be great...if not try for some shorter poles similar to the ones you would use for Classic XC skiing as opposed to those you would use for skating. Please dress for the weather as we will be outside...rain, shine or chilly weather...remember that we will be warm once we get moving! Wear shoes that you would wear for running, or a workout.

Judy Vajda will be leading us in hill bounding, ski walking and some pylometrics specific to xc skiing. For those of you who don't know Judy, she is a VASA Champion and veteran skier ...she's also a gracious person who will help us tremendously!

Remember that SheSkis runs from "Dirt to Snow" throughout the season, so save Wednesday nights from here on out...come as you are able, but we have a fun-filled season approaching with great activities planned right on until the end of March!! SheSkis is for women of all abilities and ages, so there is NO need for the intimidation factor!!

Please feel free to contact me via phone or email with any questions you may have...Linda Deneen 231-409-5683.

See you Wednesday! Linda
