FAT BIKE PUBLIC FORUM
In retrospect, the 2013-14 cross country ski season was the most contentious since the advent of freestyle skiing over 20 years ago. The DNR/TART directive to share the VASA ski trails via Fat Bike Fridays has created a great deal of controversy on both sides of the issue.
After considerable public comment, the DNR and TART Trails have agreed to host a public forum on this issue at the Traverse City Civic Center on April 28th, starting at 5:30pm. Many veteran skiers have asked the DNR for a Director's Order to designate the VASA trails as for skier's only during the grooming season. In order that they do not make a rash decision, they have decided to take all viewpoints into consideration with this open forum. Their objective is to present the current situation, then in an organized fashion (there will be a moderator) open the floor up to comment. The DNR and TART Trails will be documenting all the comments for consideration. No decisions will be made at the public meeting, however it will provide them with a better feel for how big an issue that mixed use is and evaluate the complexities associated with this change on the VASA.
